Why Does Data Center Interconnection Need Optical Transmission?

Abstract:

In recent years, with the rise of the Internet of things and artificial intelligence, the concept of "cloud" has developed rapidly. The data center, which is part of the "cloud" system that enables rapid data processing, is also trying to overdo it in faster and safer data transfers. However, this vision is transmitted by optics, so the optical communication becomes the key to realize the breakthrough of 100G or even over 100G technologies.

ICP DCI Market Scale Is Larger than Telecom Operators

Due to the development of Internet and cloud computing, the application of optical fiber communication has shifted from the central computer room of telecom operators to the data center. In 2008, the demand for fiber-optic communications in the U.S Internet company data center had surpassed telecom operators. And the data center had become the largest market for optical fiber communication. Since 2012, China has opened an Internet data center (IDC) market, which has led to the rapid expansion of the IDC market. "According to the statistics, ICP will account for 20 percent of the cost of optical transmission worldwide by 2019," said Kevin, a marketing manager at Microsemi.


With the popularization of computer, Internet and intelligent terminal as well as the rapid development of video, game and other mass flow applications, data is also starting to show an exponential rise. The continued explosion of data is also driving the rapid development of cloud computing and data centers.


Just the growth of data traffic in data centers is not beneficial for Internet of things, only interconnections between the numerous data center connectivity is likely to benefit the data transmission under the Internet of things. The extensible DC architecture meets the growth of the east-west traffic flow of the modern super-scale data center, making it possible to interconnect data centers. In that time, a large amount of data traffic will use the optical transmission into the data centers, share information between the cloud data in data centers. The optical transmission will be not only used for transmitting data within the data center, but also will be used in the data center interconnection. The optical transmission in the DCI will far exceed the size of telecom operators in the market.

The Requirements of Optical Transmission for Data Center Interconnection

With the improvement of network rate, optical communication technology is used in almost all links in data centers. From a few meters server connection to the connection of transatlantic WAN, located in the center of the data from all over the world as a high bandwidth, high density and long distance information transmission carrier. Optical communication technology will directly influence the development of future data center. So what do data center interconnections require for optical transmission?


From the perspective of hardware, the special requirement of data center interconnection for optical transmission lies in the heat dissipation process of independent data center and the special optical transceivers of DCI for clients. The application of coherent technology to data center interconnection can greatly reduce the loss of each bit optical transmission, thus improving the efficiency of data transmission.


Not only that, the coherent technology can also achieve the lowest total cost of ownership on the 100G and over 100G, abandons the traditional expensive dispersion compensation module (DCM), use optical fiber loss of noise based on the DSP CMOS chip digital compensation. The use of coherent technology can flexibly adjust the length of the fiber, also ensuring that the data transmission can be extended to 400G per wavelength, with a larger capacity to reduce the cost per bit.


It is an inevitable requirement for IoT that data center interconnects. At the same time, the large data traffic to realize remote data transmission is also driving the development of the IoT.
